An Introduction to Social Networking for Business

Social Networking for Business

In this article, I will explain in simple terms what social networking is and how you can use it as a marketing tool to grow your business. Social networking sites provide you with a platform to create your profile, share information and connect with people who have similar interests. Whether you have a small company, large corporation or you just an idea, you can benefit from using social networking.

In the past several years, it has become very popular for both business and personal use. In fact, it is considered to be one of the best strategies used today to promote a business. Did you know, social networking could help you:

  • Build company awareness
  • Build credibility
  • Form targeted online communities
  • Build relationships
  • Communicate with customers and prospects
  • Increase website traffic
  • Generate leads
  • Control your online reputation
  • Learn more about your competitors
  • Recruit employees

There are many reasons why you should consider integrating social networking into your marketing plan. The following are two examples of how it could be used to promote a business.

Social Networking Example 1

Business Name: Mary's Cupcakes

Mary wanted to promote her company using social networking. She started using Twitter because she heard it was a great way to market a business, and it was free. She created her Twitter account and promoted it to her customers through email and word-of-mouth.

Some of her customers began to follow her on Twitter. Each day, Mary would tweet a promotion to her followers. Some of her followers would retweet the promotion to their followers. At that point, she was reaching her customers and their followers. But it didn't stop there, some of her customers followers also retweeted her promotion to their followers. After several months, Mary was able to create a lot of buzz for her little cupcake business.

Social Networking Example 2

Business Name: Sam's Web Design

Sam wanted to get his name out there and establish himself as an expert in his industry. He knew once people 1) knew him, 2) trusted him and 3) liked him, then he could sell his valuable services to them. He was able to accomplish his goals by:

  • Creating a profile on LinkedIn, where he made many connections and received recommendations from others.
  • Participating in online communities, message boards and forums by providing his valuable insight on all topics related to his niche.
  • Posting his informative articles online

If you are serious about promoting your business, you should really consider social networking. Although, you can't expect changes to happen overnight, building a successful social networking campaign takes time and a lot of commitment on your part. If you stick with it and continue to post valuable content, you will generate leads. I suggest you create profiles on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You should also consider creating a free account on BiznessQuest, where you can post your business profile, events, coupons and articles.
