Sound Dietary Habits Important After Gastric Bypass
Each year thousands of people choose to battle obesity head on by undergoing gastric bypass surgery. This time-tested procedure has been proven to help people shed a tremendous amount of weight while enabling them to keep it off. The procedure, however, is one that demands lasting commitment on the part of patients to ensure long-term success and health.
A recent study sheds light on the importance for people to stick with that commitment over the long haul. The study in question points out problems some patients have with gastrointestinal complaints and food intolerance after bypass surgery. The study in question, it must be noted, included less than 250 patients who had undergone surgery and nearly 300 others who had not. In addition, patients were not asked if they had gastrointestinal complaints prior to surgery.
The study in question ultimately found that a majority of post-operative patients had some complaints related to digestion. These complaints included belching, gurgling and problems with stool being too soft or too hard. Food intolerance was also an issue, especially in regard to fried foods, carbonated drinks, sweets and spicy foods.
While the study does point out some of the potential side effects associated with gastric bypass, it also points to the need for patients to carefully monitor their food intake after this procedure. This is one of the reasons why pre-operative counseling is so strongly recommended. Following gastric bypass, patients are urged to eat small, well-balanced meals. This can help keep issues related to digestion at bay. Items like sodas and sweets may also be off the menu, as the study points out.
People who are seriously obese are at risk for a long list of potential health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. Losing weight is critical for lowering those risks. The gastric bypass can provide the help some people need to get weight in check once and for all, but it does demand diligent follow-through from patients.
